Pilcher-Cook Applauds Passage of Clinic Licensure Bill
Shawnee Senator Led Fight on Floor to Pass Pro-Life Legislation

Topeka -- Senator Mary Pilcher-Cook, Republican of Shawnee, today applauded the Kansas Senate's passage of the abortion licensure bill, H sub SB 36, by a vote of 24-15, which institutes Court-approved medical protocols and sanitation for abortion businesses. In addition, the legislation prevents abortions by surgery or pills by non- physicians and bans the novel "webcam" abortions where dangerous abortion pills would be dispensed remotely via computer. Pilcher-Cook, who carried the legislation on the floor, released the following statement:

"I am so thankful for my Senate colleagues for passing H sub SB 36, which will protect the health and safety of women while enriching a culture of life in Kansas. Today's passage comes after many years of work on behalf of many in the pro-life community. This legislation is an absolutely critical step towards ensuring basic guidelines are followed at abortion clinics, while at the same time further ensuring we value life in Kansas at all its stages," said Pilcher-Cook.

Pilcher-Cook further commented on the importance of emphasizing a culture of life.

“Over the years, there has been a lone focus to protect so-called “choice” for women. Legal abortion was supposed to end back-alley abortions. It was supposed to protect the health of women and keep them safe. However, the back alley remains, and the sexual abuse of young girls and the debasement of women continues to flourish. Abortion providers are putting dollar signs ahead of what is best for women. This has to stop. We cannot continue to look the other way."

The vote on H sub SB 36, which already passed the House, was on a motion to concur. As such, the legislation will now head directly to Governor Brownback for his signature.
